Russia roundly rejects reports its missile crossed into Poland

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu

Russia has roundly rejected reports its projectile crossed into Poland, which neighbors Ukraine, the site of an ongoing Russian military operation.

On Tuesday, the Associated Press cited local Polish media outlets as claiming that two people had "died" earlier in the day after "a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in Przewodów, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine."

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Telegram, "Statements by Polish media and officials about Russian missiles hitting Polish territory are a deliberate provocation aimed at escalating the situation."

Meanwhile, the Russian ministry of defense dismissed the reports too, saying, "Russian firepower has launched no strikes at the area between [the] Ukrainian-Polish border."

"The wreckage published by Polish mass media from the scene in Przewodow have no relation to Russian firepower," it added.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has called an emergency meeting of the country's top national security and defense officials due to, what he called, a "crisis situation," according to government spokesman Piotr Mueller.

The Polish cabinet was also set to convene to discuss the alleged incident.

Russia has been conducting the "special military operation" in Ukraine since February.

Moscow says it has launched the operation in order to defend the pro-Russian population in the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk against persecution by Kiev.

Back in 2014, the two republics broke away from Ukraine, refusing to recognize a Western-backed Ukrainian government there that had overthrown a democratically-elected Russia-friendly administration.

Ever since the beginning of the conflict, Western countries have been pumping Ukraine full of advanced weapons, something that Russia says would only prolong the hostilities.
