Tehran rejects basis for new EU sanctions against Iran

Iran insists that recent riots in the country were orchestrated by outside adversaries such as the United States, but EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday, took a different view. They have agreed on new sanctions against Iran, claiming the rioters are seeking freedom. The channel you are watching now, Press TV, has also been added to the EU sanctions list.

Press TV management has vehemently rejected claims by the EU that the channel broadcast forced confessions from detainees during recent riots in Iran. EU officials have been asked to provide evidence to back up the claims, but it's already clear that will not be forthcoming, simply because it never happened.

This latest set of sanctions follows similar measures taken against Iran by the EU in October. One EU minister says the new sanctions should not be allowed to derail talks around the Iran deal, known as the JCPOA.

During a debate on human rights in the European Parliament a few days ago, the EU was accused of displaying double standards. Amid growing economic turmoil in the EU, many experts claim sanctions against Russia have backfired. In other words, sanctions don't work.
