Trump is ‘tearing apart the Republican Party’ after election losses: Ex-New York governor

Ex-New York Governor George Pataki has said former US President Donald Trump is “tearing apart the Republican party” after the GOP failed to take control of both houses of Congress.

Following the midterm elections on November 8, the GOP failed to win control of the Senate and underperformed in races across the country. It appears the Democrats would control the Senate, and Republicans would win the House of Representatives.

“The problem is Donald Trump. The sooner he goes away, the quicker we will have the new Republican Party,” Pataki told Fox News on Sunday.

“He’s had his time and now he is tearing apart the Republican Party since the election,” added Pataki, who served as governor of New York from 1995 to 2006.

Republicans were expected to take control of the United States House of Representatives and had a good shot at a Senate majority heading into Election Day as President Joe Biden struggled with low approval ratings ahead of this week’s elections, partly due to public frustration over inflation.  

But, according to mainstream US media, Democrats outperformed expectations and on Saturday captured the Senate majority.

The Democrats are likely to control the Senate, as they have for the past two years, with 50 of its 100 seats, since Vice President Kamala Harris will hold a tie-breaking vote.

GOP Senator Bill Cassidy has put the blame of midterm election losses on Republican candidates aligned with Trump, saying those candidates “underperformed” on Election Day.

However, Trump on Sunday blamed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell for the disappointing performance.

“He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!” Trump wrote.

Pataki on Sunday said “when we talk about Trump, we lose,” saying the party “followed him off a cliff in 2018” and then “followed him to a loss to Joe Biden, of all people, in 2020.”

Pataki said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who won his reelection on Tuesday, and other rising stars in the Republican Party should now take center stage.

“There are other good candidates, but the point being, if we look forward, we’re going to win,” the former New York governor said. “If we look back with Donald Trump, we’re going to lose again.”

Republicans remained close to winning the House of Representatives as officials continued counting ballots.

It could take several days or more before the outcome of enough House races is known to determine which party will control the 435-seat chamber. As of Sunday, Republicans had won 211 seats, with 218 needed for a majority, ahead of the Democrats with 205.

However, the pro-Democratic US media is reporting the election result as if Biden’s party has scored a massive success in the election. For example, Reuters reported that the election results are a major victory for Biden and it extinguished hopes of the "red wave" that Republicans had expected leading into the midterm elections.
