US President Joe Biden referred to Cambodia as "Colombia" at an international summit in Phnom Penh led by Southeast Asian leaders. The latest gaffe is furthering concerns that the aged politician is suffering from a cognitive disorder.
"I look forward to building even stronger progress than we've already made, and I want to thank the Prime Minister of Colombia for his leadership as ASEAN chair and for hosting all of us," Biden said on Saturday while meeting his counterparts in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in the Cambodian capital, Reuters reported.
Biden, who will be 80 years old next week, was referring to Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, who is currently chairing the 10-member regional bloc.
An American political analyst warned that it is very dangerous that a man with “serious disturbances in cognition” has his hand on the nuclear button and could turn the world into “a radioactive ash heap of history.”
“I think you have to consider seriously having a review, under the 25th Amendment, of the competence of Biden to continue to hold the office,” New-York based journalist Don DeBar said, refering to the amendment of the US Constitution which deals with situations where the president or vice-president are unable to fulfill the duties of the office.
“Certainly, this should be the first order of business of the new Congress in the event the steps aren't taken before January by those charged under the law to do so. It's one thing to misspeak on occasion,” he said.
“It's quite another to demonstrate a failing memory and other serious disturbances in cognition of the person with his hand on the nuclear button,” the analyst warned.
“Those responsible for whatever comes as a consequence of their failure to act upon the oath of office they each took will have to answer for it in the proper jurisdiction. Hopefully, that will be a court of law and not the radioactive ash heap of history,” DeBar pointed out.
“And their vocal assessments of the mental health of Donald Trump during his time as president will certainly help to fix, for evidentiary purposes, their understanding of the underlying issue with respect to this case as well,” he noted.
Biden, the oldest man to run the country, is on a whirlwind trip with stops at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt, ASEAN in Phnom Penh and the G20 summit in Indonesia. He made a similar slip-up while speaking to reporters at the White House recently.
Biden's repeated verbal stumbles and tendency to meander off script during live appearances have been seized on by Republicans as proof he's too old for the White House.
US President Donald Trump has suggested that Biden cannot pass a cognitive test. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is aimed at detecting mild cognitive impairments such as dementia.
Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has suggested that aged politicians in the American government should undergo a "cognitive test."
Haley quoted instances suggesting Biden was not completely aware of everything going on in his administration, such as the fallout with France after his administration had pushed Paris aside last year and signed a lucrative multi-billion nuclear deal with Australia for submarines. France accused Biden of stabbing it in the back and acting like his predecessor Trump.
Last year, Biden was filmed snoozing as delegates spoke at the opening of an international conference in Scotland.
"Sleepy Joe" became a popular social media trend after the US president apparently dozed off at the United Nations COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
Despite all this, the Democratic president said this week he intends to run for re-election in 2024, with a final decision likely early next year.
