Less than three weeks before US midterm elations, a new poll shows an overwhelming majority of Democrats and Republicans believe the political opposition poses a threat that, if not stopped, will destroy the country as they know it.
The NBC News poll, published on Sunday, indicates 81 percent of Democratic respondents said that the Republican Party’s agenda poses a threat to the country.
By comparison, 79 percent of Republican respondents said that Democrats are a threat to the US, while 20 percent of Republican respondents don’t think so.
Meanwhile, 47 percent of respondents said that they prefer Democrats to control Congress rather than Republicans.
Some 46 percent, however, prefer a Republican-controlled Congress. Seven percent were undecided.
The survey also shows a competitive contest for November and offers positive signs for both major political parties.
The poll also finds 70% of all registered voters expressing high interest in the upcoming election, saying that this election is “more important” to them than past midterms.
By party, however, 78% of Republicans have a high interest in the midterms, compared with 69% of Democrats.
The latest poll shows how polarized the electorate is before the midterm elections.
US President Joe Biden said earlier on Friday he predicted a final hour shift in favor of the Democrats in the midterm elections.
The president’s party, however, has a very thin majority in Congress but Republican leaders say they will block his legislation if they take over the legislature.
Record inflation, long-term recession, a costly, hard-line approach to the unrest in Ukraine, dissatisfaction with the results of the so-called “Blue Wave” of 2020 - many are trying to pinpoint the reason for the recent drop for Democrats.
In the NBC poll, 45% of registered voters approve of Biden’s overall job performance, while 52% disapprove — unchanged from September.
