Iran warns EU
Iran has warned the European Union against irrational acts of meddling in its affairs over recent riots in the country. Kan’ani also slammed European countries for applying double standards to riots in Iran and elsewhere. Kan’ani said they’re calling on Iran not to take action against rioters but they act differently when the same happens in their own countries. Some European officials have criticized Iran for its response to the unrest that followed the death of a young woman last month. European Union ambassadors have agreed to a sanctions list against Iran during their meeting on Monday. The list contains 11 Iranian officials and four entities. They will be subject to EU visa bans and asset freezes.
Russia-Ukraine war
Several explosions have hit the Ukrainian capital for the second time in a week, damaging several residential buildings. Officials say the city was struck five times in the early morning attack. Kiev’s mayor says at least three people are killed and several others are hospitalized. Separately, officials say three other people were killed in Russian attacks in northeast Sumy regions. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s prime minister says Russian strikes targeted critical infrastructure in three regions, knocking out electricity to hundreds of towns and villages across the country. Russian and Ukrainian forces are also engaged in heavy fighting around Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.
Korean peninsula tensions
South Korea begins new war games amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The south says the joint drills with the US and Japan are designed to boost ability to respond to what Seoul calls North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. Last week, tensions flared after the North fired a missile, shot more than 500 artillery shells and flew a multitude of warplanes near the inter Korean border. Seoul condemned the moves and imposed its first unilateral sanctions against Pyongyang in nearly five years. But the North has accused the South's military of escalating tensions with its own artillery firing. Pyongyang says its latest military activities are in response to military drills by South Korea and the United States. Pyongyang considers the war games as a rehearsal for invasion.
