'No foreign meddling in Asia'

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi says the security of Asia must be protected by countries in that region. Raeisi said interference by external powers in Asia is not the solution to issues in that region, and will only add to the problems there. The Iranian president made the comments in Tehran hours ago when he returned from Kazakhstan. There, he attended the 6th summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, known as CICA. In his address to the summit, Raeisi said those states that loot the riches of independent nations in the name of war of terror can never be trustworthy partners. Iran's president urged Asian countries to work together closely to foil the superpowers’ plots and ensure stability in their region.

Iraq's new president

Moving on now to Iraq where lawmakers have just elected Abdul Latif Rashid as new president. The Thursday session was the fourth attempt this year by the Iraqi parliament to elect a new president. Abdul Latif Rashid is a veteran Kurdish politician and a former water minister. He’s replacing Barham Saleh. Rashid has named Mohammed Shia al-Sudani as prime minister-designate. Iraq has been without a government since parliamentary elections in October last year. That’s when Shia cleric Muqtada Sadr’s political party won the most number of seats. But Sadr failed to form a government, asking his party’s lawmakers to resign. He then asked for the dissolution of parliament and early elections. That prompted a wave of deadly protests in Iraq.

Russia-West tensions

Germany and over a dozen of its NATO partners plan to jointly procure air defense systems they say will protect their territory from missiles. The German defense minister was speaking at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. The initiative is called European sky shield, and comprises half of NATO’s members. They eye Israeli and American systems among their options. The development comes as the West and Russia ratchet up war of words over Ukraine, now over the use of nukes. The European Union says the Russian army will be annihilated, if President Vladimir Putin launches a nuclear attack against Ukraine.
