56% of Democrats say Biden shouldn’t run for reelection in 2024: Poll

A majority of Democratic voters say US President Joe Biden should not run for the White House in 2024, according to a new poll.

The ABC News-Washington Post poll, produced by Langer Research Associates and published on Sunday, found that 56 percent of Democratic voters oppose Biden’s reelection bid, while 9 percent said they had no opinion.

Just 35 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents want Biden, who was the oldest individual to be inaugurated when he was sworn in January 2021, to run for a second term in 2024, according to the poll.

Biden is telling everyone he plans to run for reelection in 2024, but most Democrats aren’t sure he will follow through on that plan. However, Biden's aides have also stressed the president intends to run again in 2024.

“It’s much too early to make that kind of decision,” Biden said when asked about his intentions on CBS’s “60 Minutes” last week, adding that an official announcement would trigger multiple campaign reporting rules.

“I’m a great respecter of fate,” he continued. “And so, what I’m doing is I’m doing my job. I’m gonna do that job. And within the timeframe that makes sense after this next election cycle here, going into next year, make a judgment on what to do.”

Only 39 percent of respondents approve of Biden’s job performance, compared to 53 percent who disapprove, according to the poll.

Biden’s approval rating has remained low for more than a year with inflation near a 40-year high.

Biden has been under attack for his advanced age from Republicans. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations and Republican Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley has even suggested that aged politicians in the American government should undergo a "cognitive test."

According to another recent poll, Biden is the least popular US president in decades with 59 percent of Americans believing his performance has been poor and 45 percent “strongly disapproving" of the Democratic president's leadership in the past two years.

Biden and his team have been denying official reports indicating that the US economy is in a state of recession.

Two-thirds say midterms more important than past elections

Meanwhile, two-thirds of US voters think the upcoming midterm elections in November are more important than past midterms, according to the poll.

The poll found that 67 percent of voters feel casting a ballot in the midterms is more important than in past elections, with 35 percent saying this year is “much” more important. 

Whereas, 28 percent of voters said they believe this year’s election has about the same importance as previous years, and 5 percent said it’s less important.

A US academic predicts the defeat of Democrats in the nation’s lower House of Representative in November’s mid-term elections, further raising the potential re-election of former hawkish president Donald Trump.

Republicans are in the lead to control the US House of Representatives after this year’s midterm elections, with 230 seats projected for the GOP and 205 for Democrats, according to a recent CBS News Battleground Tracker.

Republican victories in 230 districts would give GOP 12 seats more than the 218 required to control the House, the poll showed, according to The Hill. 

And more Democrats reported being incited to vote by former President Donald Trump than by their own party leader.

Only 39 percent of Democrats say their midterm vote is “a lot” about President Joe Biden, compared to 62 percent of Republicans.

Other polls have also depicted a gloomy landscape for Democrats as they gear up for the 2022 midterm elections.
