Iran president's UN speech

Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi calls for the prosecution of former US President Donald Trump for ordering the assassination of top General Qassem Soleimani. Addressing the UN General Assembly, Raeisi underlined that the Islamic Republic will legally pursue the US assassination of the anti-terror icon. He also hailed Iran's role for confronting high-handed and interventionist policies, including the "US-crafted terrorism". Elsewhere in his speech, Raeisi strongly condemned the West for applying double standards when it comes to the human rights issue. He said those supporting rights violations and terrorism must be held to account. The Iranian president also stressed the need for multilateralism, saying it has far-reaching significance for a just world.

Russia military mobilization

Russian President Vladimir Putin warns the West that his country would use all available means to respond to threats against its territorial integrity. In a televised address, Putin noted that Moscow has enough weapons to counter any threats, insisting that this is not just a bluff. He said Russia’s operation in Ukraine is aimed at liberating the Donbas region as most people there do not want to return to what he called the yoke of Ukraine. Putin also ordered Russia's first mobilization since World War II. Russia's defense minister says the partial mobilization will likely add 300,000 reservists to support the military campaign. However, the announcement drew reaction from the president of the European Council who said the bloc’s support for Kiev will remain steadfast. A European commission spokesman also described Putin’s move as another sign of his desperation, saying there would be "consequences".

China-US tensions

As the tensions over Taiwan escalates between the US and China, Beijing has issued a yet another stern warning against what it calls US troublemaking for the regional peace and stability. The warning came after a US warship and a Canadian frigate sailed through the strategic Taiwan Strait on Tuesday. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the military would remain on high alert to counteract all threats and provocations and would resolutely safeguard China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Beijing considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly warned Washington against its growing nexus with the island.
