Five thousand and six hundred meters does not seem to be a long distance, but vertically, it turns into a breathtaking race against gravity.
Climbers from Iran, Russia, Tanzania, India and Armenia’s military jointly conquered the highest peak in Iran and West Asia, Mount Damavand.
The joint climb began on September 10 and wrapped up after 5 days with an awards ceremony.
As the host, Iran had a strong presence. Out of the 70 mountaineers who reached the top, 56 were from Iran.
The event comes as part of an initiative launched by the International Military Sports Council or shortly CISM.
Established in 1948, the Brussels-based entity organizes up to 20 different sports competitions for the armies of 140 member states every year, with the aim of encouraging peace through sports.
This is the first joint climb organized by the CISM. The military sports body says it plans to hold mountaineering events every year in different member states.
Climbing for peace is the motto of this mountaineering contest. The CISM says aside from enhancing the physical preparedness of the participating troops, the event seeks to foster peace and friendship among the armed forces of different nations.
