Liz Truss has begun celebrations after winning the race to become the new leader of the ruling Conservative Party, which also makes her the next British prime minister.

The foreign secretary, who won 81,326 votes of Tory members to the former chancellor’s 60,399, takes over from Boris Johnson, who was ousted by his own MPs earlier this summer.

Building a new cabinet, formulating an effective energy plan, and figuring out how to remove the pressure of the severe cost of living crisis are all top on her agenda.

Truss inherits a deeply divided party. Lagging in the polls and a long line of past scandals have left many experts fearing lasting damage to Tory electoral prospects.

Truss won't officially become PM until Tuesday after meeting the Queen alongside Johnson. However, the future of her premiership will depend largely on how the wider electorate feel about her leadership.
