The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced on Wednesday that it has officially begun producing hi-tech irradiation equipment for food preservation.

The trending technique used to be imported to the country in limited stocks, and therefore large amounts of foodstuff would be preserved using conventional methods, including chemical sterilization, which poses health risks.

During irradiation, food is exposed to electron beams, X-rays or gamma rays. The gamma rays are produced using Cobalt-60 as a radioactive isotope. The applications of technology are not limited to the food industry and can be used in medication and pharmaceuticals as well.

Food irradiation can also play a big part in the economy as it prevents tons of foodstuffs from turning into waste.

Plus, many countries do not import food products that are not irradiated. For Iran with over 120 mn tons of food production each year, indigenizing irradiation is a big game changer.

Experts say irradiation is more eco-friendly and economical than chemical sterilization processes. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says this trending technology is now fully indigenized and will be widely used in other industries as well to ensure a healthier and more economical life.
