Iran’s Greco Roman Wrestling team have picked up 1 gold and 2 silver medals from the first 5-weight categories of the Under 20 World Championships in Bulgaria.
Iman Mohammadi controlled the 63kg final against a Kyrgyz grappler with ease and won 6-1, most of the points coming via stepouts. However, the 87kg gold slipped through the fingers of Abolfazl Choubani, whose final bout ended up 1-all against an Armenian opponent, but lost it only to a decision made by the jury.
And in the other final, Iran’s 130kg man Fardin Hedayati threw away a 4-2 lead to bow out 6-4 against his Ukrainian opponent, thus settling for silver.
Nonetheless, team Iran, who’ve got 3 more finalists and 2 bronze medal candidates in the second 5-weight categories, are well on course to take the crown with 69 points already in the bag, as Ukraine and Armenia trail them on 56 and 55 respectively.
