Shia Muslims living across Austria have joined in global commemorations as the Muslim World marks the day of Ashura; a day that is the emotional peak of the 10 days mourning period to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. The grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad who was slain by the forces of the tyrannical ruler, Yazid ibn Muawiyah, on the plains of the modern-day Iraqi city of Karbala over 1400 years ago.
This historic tragedy was sparked after Imam Hussain began a revolution against the corrupt regime headed by Yazid. Many historians believe that without this great sacrifice of the Imam's life, Islam as we know it could have become totally corrupted.
Dressed all in black and expressing great grief, local mourners told Press TV why keeping the memory of Hussain's revolution alive is so important.
These scenes of passionate remembrance prove that any hope Hussain's killers had of snuffing out his revolution were a total failure, as Hussain's name continues to rings out across the world, even as far as Europe and beyond.
