Iran wants full economic benefits of JCPOA, US guarantee: FM Amir-Abdollahian

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the Islamic Republic seeks to avail itself of full economic benefits of the 2015 deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He made the remarks in a Monday meeting with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio, in Rome, where he is currently on an official visit to discuss expansion of ties as well as regional and international developments with Italian officials.

“We believe that Iran must be able to use the full economic benefits of the JCPOA. The United States must totally understand this reality when it comes to giving guarantees,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran has offered its new initiatives in this regard, adding, “Americans, however, did not act correctly and logically. They must reach a realistic understanding of this issue.”

Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran wants the JCPOA to function correctly, adding, “We are seriously after a good and durable agreement” on the deal.

“Iran is interested in reclaiming its natural share of the [global] energy market and help the international community,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

Iran and the US concluded two days of indirect talks, mediated by the European Union, in the Qatari capital of Doha, late last month in an attempt to break the stalemate in reviving the JCPOA.

At the end of the talks, Iran and the EU said they would keep in touch “about the continuation of the route and the next stage of the talks.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the talks to revive the 2015 agreement can succeed if the United States acts realistically.

The talks in Doha follow seven rounds of fruitless negotiations in the Austrian capital of Vienna between Iran and the five remaining parties to the JCPOA since April last year.

The Italian foreign minister, for his part, said his Iranian counterpart's visit to Rome is very important in the light of current international developments, describing it as an appropriate opportunity to develop mutual relations.

Di Maio added that Italy and the European Union want the negotiations on the JCPOA revival to culminate in an agreement, expressing his country's readiness to play a positive role toward that goal.

He also noted that Italian firms are keen to continue economic activities in Iran.

Expansion of bilateral relations and cooperation as well as international and regional issues of mutual interest topped Amir-Abdollahian’s talks with his Italian counterpart on Monday.

Before leaving for Rome, Amir-Abdollahian told reporters in Tehran that his visit was made on official invitation from the Italian foreign minister.

“We have already met and held negotiations twice in New York and Munich. Following up on the two countries’ political, economic and trade cooperation is among the main goals of this visit,” he added.

Amir-Abdollahian, who is accompanied with a high-ranking delegation in his visit to Italy, will also meet with Vatican officials during his stay in Rome.
