Former US President Donald Trump was removed as director of his own media company shortly before the firm was subpoenaed, according to a report.

Quoting a legal filing, AFP on Friday reported that Trump's son, Donald Jr., and some other individuals were also removed in June as directors of Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). The company owns the social media platform Truth Social, Trump’s own social media app.

Trump, who has decried Twitter and Facebook and vowed to fight “the tyranny of Big Tech”, has reportedly raised about $1 billion from a group of unidentified investors for Truth Social.

The news was first reported on Thursday by the Sarasota Herald Tribune, the Florida city where TMTG is based.

In response, Truth Social said the report was "fake news" and insisted Trump still served as the company's chairman.

Truth Social's official account stated the Sarasota Herald story was false but stopped short of denying that Trump had been removed as director.

"Donald Trump remains on the board of Trump Media and Technology Group," said the post, adding that his title was "chairman".

US financial regulators and prosecutors in New York are investigating TMTG over its use to go public of a shell company called Digital World.

TMTG filed the document on June 8 to the Florida Department of State to remove Trump as director. It happened just weeks before it and Digital World were served with legal papers ordering directors and other executives to testify.

TMTG's website has a page titled "board of directors" but it is blank.

Trump, who believes that the election was rigged by the US establishment in favor of Biden, has said that the 2020 presidential election was “the greatest Election Hoax in history.”

According to recent surveys, most Republicans also believe that the election was stolen from the former president, and Trump is the legitimate president of the United States.

Trump has accused Twitter and Facebook of wanting to help Biden’s campaign by enforcing policies that restrict users' ability to share a New York Post story that contained alleged details of Hunter Biden’s business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company, also saying the former vice president had met with an adviser of the company.

Pulitzer Prize-winner American investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald has revealed in a recent article that an axis of the CIA, Big Tech and the DNC-allied wing of the corporate media spread an absolute lie in the weeks before the 2020 presidential election to help Biden win the vote.

He wrote that “the CIA, Big Tech, the liberal wing of the corporate media and the Democratic Party” censored and suppressed “a series of major reports about then-presidential frontrunner Joe Biden.
