Iran’s Bank Melli has announced it will compensate dozens of customers who have been affected by a recent robbery of safe deposit boxes at one of its main branches in the capital Tehran.

Bank Melli said in statement on Wednesday that the compensation will be offered despite the fact that the bank is not legally liable for the losses suffered to the contents of the rented safe deposit boxes.

Burglars broke through the walls of an underground facility run by Bank Melli in downtown Tehran on Monday and stole the contents of more than 160 safe deposit boxes in addition to surveillance cameras and other monitoring items.

Police and judicial officials have opened an investigation into a rare bank robbery which came following of a three-day holiday in Iran.

Bank Melli said victims will be directly and swiftly compensated for 50% of the value of what they personally claim were being kept in the safe boxes.

It said the compensation will be granted on June 11 and victims will be able to access the funds that will remain blocked in a bank account with a judicial order.

The statement added that other compensation claims will be settled after results of the judicial investigation into the case are known.

The compensation offer came after a group of the victims demonstrated in front of the Bank Melli branch where the robbery had occurred.

Reports said police had to intervene in the demonstration to calm down some of angry protesters.
