An air raid siren over the separatist held Donetsk. The Ukrainian army shells this city every day. School 22, an old building; it survived World War II. But not this conflict.
Another School nearby. Also hit. It’s clear these institutions have been specifically targeted. There is blood on the pavement.
Workmen have put the shell casing on the back of a lorry. The Donetsk People’s Republic say this is a 155 mm shell fired by the American supplied M777 howitzer. As many as108 of these weapons were delivered to Ukraine. Some have now reached the front line meaning Ukraine can now blow up schools at a further distance.
In a battered geography classroom – there are a map of Great Britain and some flags. The children, who were taught here, have learned a different lesson about NATO countries today. That their weapons are being used to deliberating target and kill civilians.
