Jai Hindley has become the first Australian to win the Giro d’Italia proving his near-miss at 2020’s event was no fluke.
The 26 year-old who lost the Giro title to Tao Geoghegan Hart on the final day 2 years ago, made sure there would be no heartbreak again by opening up a 1 minute 25 seconds lead on the penultimate day, heading into the decisive time-trial stage. Hindley limited his losses to closest rival Richard Carapaz to just 7 seconds to secure the overall victory and get his redemption. Meanwhile, the final stage victory went to home rider Matteo Sobrero with a benchmark of 22 minutes 24 seconds.
