Conservative Yoon Seok Yeol was inaugurated President of South Korea in a ceremony in front of the country’s National Assembly.
Although President Yoon has vowed to take a hard line on North Korea, his address offered Pyongyang conditional assistance.
The South’s President Yoon’s words may ring hollow for North Korea, as President Yoon has promised to bolster the country’s military deterrent and strengthen its alliance with the United States. Some analysts suggest that may be destabilizing.
South Koreans want President Yoon to address a raft of domestic issues as well, including housing and economic disparity.
South Korea's new President Yoon wasted no time in demonstrating the hard-line deterrent strategy his administration intends to apply to North Korea. The US and South Korea began combined military drills with F-35 joint strike fighter aircraft just hours before Yoon took office.
