Israel demolitions

Israeli forces have attacked a group of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. A young man has been injured and rushed to the hospital. The Palestinians were angry at the destruction of the home of a prisoner in Jenin. Omar Jaradat was detained in December last year on charges of involvement in an operation that left an Israeli dead. Recently, an Israeli court ordered the demolition to go ahead. A senior member of Hamas resistance movement has condemned the move. Ezzat al-Rashq says Israel’s insistence on continuing its crimes will not bring security to it or its settlers. He warned that the demolition of homes will only enhance the determination of Palestinians to resist the occupier and take back every inch of their land.

Ukraine war

Day 73 of the Russia-Ukraine war. Several regions in Ukraine come under missile attacks amid evacuation efforts in the Russian-held city of Mariupol. Russia's defense ministry says high-precision missiles hit airfields in several regions, including Odesa, in southwestern Ukraine. It says a number of Ukrainian aircraft were destroyed. According to the ministry, US and European military equipment near the northeastern city of Kharkiv was also hit by Iskander missiles. Kiev says three people were killed in a missile strike on the eastern town of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts are underway in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Kiev says all women, children and elderly people have been evacuated from the besieged Azovstal steel factory. That is part of a joint operation by the UN and the Red Cross, which has seen hundreds of civilians evacuated from the steelworks recently.

United Ireland debate

The nationalist party, Sinn Fein, is celebrating a historic first ever win in the Northern Ireland Assembly election. It's setting in motion a process that could lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom and reunification with the Republic of Ireland. Shin Fein's deputy leader Michelle O'Neill described the election win as a defining moment, saying that Northern Ireland was entering a new era. The republican party has so far secured 23 seats in the 90-seat legislature with O'Neill set to claim the role of the first minister. The rival pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party has already conceded defeat. A unionist party has been the largest in government since Northern Ireland was formed in 1921. The ultimate goal of Sinn Fein is for Northern Ireland to leave the UK and become one country with the Republic of Ireland. Meanwhile, in the UK's local elections, embattled Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative party has lost control of key councils, including in London. The Tories suffered an overall loss of almost 400 councilors in the vote. Pro-independence sentiments also remained strong in Scotland, where the Scottish National Party again finished as the biggest winner in council elections.
