GOP enjoys ‘big opportunity’ in 2024 election, supporting Trump ‘mistake’

Former US Attorney General William Barr has said the Republican Party has a "big opportunity" to win the presidency; however, it needed to choose a nominee other than Donald Trump as its candidate in 2024 presidential election.

“I don’t think he should be our nominee — the Republican Party nominee,” Barr was quoted as saying by The Hill in an interview on Newsmax on Thursday.

“And I think Republicans have a big opportunity — it would be a big mistake to put him forward,” he insisted.

Barr, who served under Trump during the latter's presidency, revealed in his book titled One Damn Thing After Another that the former president “lost his grip” and turned "manic" after losing in the 2020 election.

“He stopped listening to his advisers, became manic and unreasonable, and was off the rails,” Barr wrote in his memoirs.

Barr added that Trump had surrounded himself with like-minded "whack jobs".

“He surrounded himself with sycophants, including many whack jobs from outside the government, who fed him a steady diet of comforting but unsupported conspiracy theories,” according to the nation’s top judge at that time.

Despite the widespread controversy surrounding the former president, reportedly, Trump still carries considerable clout in the Republican Party's leadership.

In a hypothetical 2024 matchup with the incumbent Joe Biden, a recent poll showed that Trump would win.

In this regard, a Canadian professor has warned that the US could become a “rightwing dictatorship” by 2030.

Homer-Dixon pointed out in an article run recently by the Globe and Mail that former president Trump and “a host of acolytes and wannabes such as Fox [News]’s Tucker Carlson and Georgia representative Majorie Taylor Greene” have transformed the Republican Party “into a near-fascist personality cult that’s a perfect instrument for wrecking democracy.”

“By 2025, American democracy could collapse, causing extreme domestic political instability, including widespread civil violence," the British Columbia-based academic added.

“By 2030, if not sooner, the country could be governed by a rightwing dictatorship,” he warned.
