Iranians are marking Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Destiny, the occasion when the holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet of Islam some 14 centuries ago.
It's a night when the holy book of Quran is believed to be revealed to prophet Mohammad. And to Muslims, it's a once in a year occasion to reach out to God to wash away their sins and fulfill their wishes.
Mashhad is one of the hotspots of Lailat al-Qadr ceremonies, since it is home to the shrine of the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims, Imam Reza, who is one of the descendents of the prophet of Islam.
Every year on this night, the shrine gets jam-packed with pilgrims, who keep vigil while praying.
No exact date is provided for the Night of Destiny, but all Islamic references are unanimous that the Quran was revealed to the prophet on one of three different dates: the 19th, the 21st, or the 23rd night of the holy month of Ramadan. Now, this is the third Night of Destiny.
Muslims never miss out on Lailat al-Qadr ceremonies, as they believe that on this night, their destiny is determined based on their wishes.
Now as this is the last and most probable night of the Quran's revelation to the prophet, worshippers keep on their whispers with God until dawn.
