Afghanistan mosque explosion

In yet another bombing in Afghanistan a blast tore through a mosque in the northern city of Kunduz. The Taliban spokesman says the explosion left 33 people dead and 43 others injured. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, which followed multiple blasts claimed by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the country. The Taliban say they have arrested a Daesh member in connection with a Thursday bomb attack at a Shia mosque in Mazar Sharif. They say he was the mastermind of the deadly blast. Local sources say over three dozen people were killed in the Mazar Sharif bombing. On Thursday Kunduz was also rocked in a similar attack where four people lost their lives. Major cities in Afghanistan have been reeling from bomb attacks since the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

US-China Pacific rivalry

The US has warned it would respond accordingly if China installs a military base on the strategic Solomon Islands. The White House issued the warning after a high-level US delegation met with the leadership in the tiny Pacific state. During a meeting with the prime minister of the Solomon Islands, US officials said Washington would expedite the opening of an embassy there. The US and its allies, including Australia seek to counter Chinese influence in the Solomon Islands following the signing of a new security agreement between Honiara and Beijing. The White House says the pact has potential regional security implications for Washington and its allies.
