Israeli violations at al-Aqsa threaten regional, global peace, says Arab League

Members of the Arab Ministerial Committee for the International Action against illegal Israeli policies and measures in the occupied al-Quds meet in Jordan's Amman on April 21, 2022.

The Arab League says constant Israeli violations and incursions at the holy al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied Old City of al-Quds has been a flagrant affront to Muslim feelings that could trigger a wider conflict.

In a statement released after an emergency meeting in Amman on Thursday, the 22-nation bloc said while Israel is restricting the right of worship for Muslims at al-Aqsa Mosque, extremist settlers under police protection are being allowed at the height of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan to enter the holy site.

"These violations are a blatant affront and provocation of Muslim feelings everywhere and they risk a cycle of violence that threatens security and stability in the region and the world," the statement read.

Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Israel is violating a centuries-old policy according to which non-Muslims may visit the al-Aqsa compound, but not pray there.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi, whose country serves as the custodian of al-Aqsa Mosque, also said, "Our demands are clear that al-Aqsa and Haram al-Sharif in all its area is a sole place of worship for Muslims."

Safadi said he had recently received assurances from the US, a key backer and benefactor of the Tel Aviv regime, that Israel would halt entry by settlers to al-Aqsa in the last 10 days of Ramadan that starts on Friday.

Jordanian lawmakers have already called for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador in response to the ongoing Israeli aggression at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The Israeli regime has stepped up its deadly acts of aggression across the Palestinian territories since the beginning of Ramadan.

The most recent episode of violence began at dawn Friday, when Israeli forces raided the mosque through the Moroccan Gate, also known as the Mughrabi Gate, firing sound bombs and rubber bullets randomly at the worshipers. The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRSC) said over 150 fasting Palestinians were injured.

For the fifth day in a row on Thursday, Israeli forces raided al-Aqsa Mosque using tear gas, and rubber-coated steel bullets, in an attempt to expel Muslim worshipers from the yards for the presence of Israeli settlers at the holy site.

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) called on UN experts and rapporteurs to hold the regime to account for its extrajudicial killings of Palestinians across the occupied territories, which have left more than 40 people dead since the beginning of the current year.

Back in May, frequent acts of violence against Palestinian worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque led to an 11-day war between Palestinian resistance groups in the besieged Gaza Strip and Israel, during which the occupying regime killed at least 260 Palestinians, including 66 children.
