Russia-Ukraine war

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Moscow is initiating a new phase of its special military operation in Ukraine. Earlier, the Russian defense ministry reported dozens of airstrikes in eastern Ukraine overnight, targeting 13 Ukrainian positions in the Donbass region. The ministry also issued a new ultimatum for Ukrainian forces in the besieged port city of Mariupol to lay down their arms. On Monday, Russia took over Kreminna, the first city to fall in the east in the new Russian offensive. This has been confirmed by Ukrainian officials. The Russian war on Ukraine began in late February. The UN says nearly five million people have fled since the conflict started.

 Kabul explosions

Three huge explosions rip through two educational centers in the Afghan capital, leaving a number of dead and injured. Two back-to-back blasts targeted a boys' high school located in a neighborhood dominated by the Shia Hazarah community in the western part of Kabul. Earlier, another explosion hit a Tuition Center in the same area. There are conflicting reports on the number of casualties. The Taliban say six people were killed and 25 others were injured. Unofficial reports, however, put the number of deaths at 25. So far, there's been no claim of responsibility. Iran has condemned the attacks, urging Afghanistan’s acting government led by the Taliban to identify those behind the terrorist act and bring them to justice.

Turkey Iraq offensive

Iraq has summoned Turkey's ambassador to Baghdad to lodge protest against the recent cross-border Turkish military operation. The Iraqi foreign ministry said the envoy was handed a firmly-worded note of protest. Iraq urged its northern neighbor to put an end to acts of provocation and unacceptable violations. Baghdad also called on Ankara to respect its territorial integrity and withdraw forces from Iraq. Turkey on Monday said it had launched an air and ground offensive against the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK in northern Iraq. Turkey and its western allies have designated the PKK as a terrorist outfit. The group has been waging a deadly insurgency in Turkey since 1984 to establish an autonomous Kurdish region.
