After a three-day visit to Yemen's capital, Sana'a, the United Nations envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, held a press conference in Sana'a International Airport before leaving the country.
Grundberg said he discussed implementing all the elements of the recently announced truce. The UN envoy said preparations for opening Sana'a airport are ongoing. However, observers say the truce has failed so far to open Sana’a airport and the UN envoy was not able to clarify the time of the first flight from Sana’a airport.
This visit to Sana'a is the first for Grundberg since he was appointed as the United Nations envoy for Yemen last August, as Yemen's national salvation government has repeatedly refused to engage in any negotiations observed by the new envoy.
However, this is not the case anymore as the UN managed to convince the parties of the war to agree on a two-months truce a few days ago.
Observers say the UN envoy's visit to Sana'a proves that Yemen's National Salvation Government is willing to reach peace, contrary to the claims of Saudi Arabia.
They believe that the war will come to an end as the international community seeks to protect Saudi oil, especially amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict that caused a surge in fuel prices across the world.
