Partygate scandal continues for UK PM

The Partygate scandal lingers on with the roll call of shame growing ever longer with every leak. On Tuesday, more bad news for Prime minister Boris Johnson’s inner circle as the identity of another high-profile Covid rule-breaker was revealed. Helen McNamara, ironically the government’s former ethics chief has apologized for her part in attending a party on June 18, 2020 in the Cabinet Office during the height of Covid restrictions, calling it ‘an error in judgment.’

There has been criticism of the way the Partygate scandal continues to be addressed by the government and why the identities of those issued with fines still not made public.

With the next phase of the Sue Gray report expected to be published in May, there is mounting pressure for full disclosure to avoid further embarrassment.

Parliamentarians in the building behind me - many of them from the government benches - are growing tired of the constant drip drip of leaks and names, with every week seemingly bringing fresh revelations. whilst there have been pushes to have full transparency over Partygate, there has been some resistance from the very heart of government, seemingly some argue, so the public loses interest.

Despite the PM seemingly benefiting from other issues like Ukraine taking center stage, there is still a sense of anger and injustice leveled at Boris Johnson and his colleagues who flouted rules they created.

The Met says investigations continue with the prospect of more fines being issued.
