Iran has lambasted a terrorist attack on a gathering of people in Afghanistan’s western city of Herat, warning once again of the enemies’ divisive plots.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh on Sunday expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Afghanistan.
He said Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban movement should take responsibility for the security of the citizens and intensify measures to protect the Afghan people, especially the vulnerable ethnic and religious groups.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is confident that our Muslim brothers and sisters in Afghanistan will thwart the divisive conspiracies of their enemies with empathy, solidarity, and joint efforts,” Khatibzadeh added.
At least five civilians were killed and 25 others injured in two explosions in Afghanistan’s western Herat province on Friday, Taliban officials said.
According to The Associated Press, Herat provincial spokesman, Mahmood Rasoly said the two bombs went off among civilians at a field used for traditional Afghan games, such as mud wrestling and Buzkashi, played with horse-mounted players.
Several attacks are reported each week throughout Afghanistan, including some claimed by Daesh terrorist group.
The Friday explosions, however, were not claimed by anyone.
Afghanistan has been in turmoil since the Taliban, who had previously ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, took power again on August 15 last year and subsequently announced the formation of a caretaker government.
The United States and its allies have largely suspended their financial assistance to Afghanistan since August, adding fuel to a refugee crisis that has dramatically affected Afghanistan’s neighbors.
Iran and the other neighbors of Afghanistan have been putting up efforts to help with the establishment of security in the war-torn country.
On Thursday, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the UN said the Islamic Republic has dispatched more than 30 shipments of humanitarian aid to the Afghan people in recent months.
“Iran has hosted millions of refugees, who have unfortunately received the least international aid in the last 40 years. Iran has dispatched more than 30 shipments of humanitarian aid to Afghan people in recent months. This is just one example of the assistance that Iran has provided to the people of Afghanistan,” Majid Takht-Ravanchi said.
