Israeli forces have reportedly shot and seriously injured a young Palestinian man after he allegedly stabbed a settler in the Old City of occupied al-Quds.

Tensions simmer in the flashpoint area over Israeli plans to forcibly evict Palestinian families from their homes and frequent desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

In a statement, Israeli authorities said a 35-year-old man was stabbed and lightly wounded near the First Station on Saturday morning.

The unnamed Palestinian man, 20, was shot by Israeli police officers at the scene. He was in serious condition.

Hamas reaction

Hamas praised the operation, stating that the incident demonstrates “an uptick in resistance against the occupation across the occupied territories.”

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said residents of “the holy city [of al-Quds] will continue to struggle for its liberation, and expulsion of the occupying army and settlers.”

“The spirit of sacrifice possessed by our young generation is a firm guarantee that our blessed revolution will eventually emerge triumphant over usurping Zionists,” he said.

The stabbing follows several similar incidents in the Old City of al-Quds over the past few weeks.

On March 7, Israeli forces shot dead a young Palestinian man after he allegedly stabbed two officers.

Israel charged four Palestinians from East al-Quds with acts of terrorism and promoting Hamas operations in the city, Haaretz reported Friday.

The main suspect is Khaled Sabah, who according to the indictment was in charge of Hamas activities in al-Qud and transferred funds from Turkey to support Hamas members in Israel, the paper said.

Sabah, the indictment states, was also tasked to establish and operate a military and organizational infrastructure in al-Quds for Hamas.

The three other men indicted are Sabah’s two sons, Munib and Musa’ab, and Firas Tutah. They were arrested in February in a joint police and Shin Bet operation.

The so-called state prosecutor's office requested to detain the suspects until the legal proceedings against them were exhausted and ordered to freeze their assets.
