The Mayor of London and a group of British Parliamentarians have joined the chorus of outrage that is building after details of the ‘inhumane’ fashion in which a black teenage girl was strip searched at school after -wrongly- being accused of possessing cannabis.
A safeguarding review has issued a damning report into the treatment of a young black girl who was strip searched at school by police. The ‘traumatic’ search by Metropolitan Police officers took place at the girl’s school without adult supervision and in the knowledge that she was menstruating, the report adds.
The report concludes that the strip search should never have happened, was unjustified and racism was likely to have been an influencing factor.
The Metropolitan police have responded to the results of the safeguarding review calling the incident regrettable they’ve also apologized to the young lady in question, to her family and to the wider community, but the question is just how many times will the met find itself having to defend its actions.
Though shocking, the case highlights the fact that ethnic minority minors are disproportionately impacted by their interaction with law enforcement and other officials.
Family members have described Child as changing from a ‘happy-go-lucky girl to a timid recluse that hardly speaks’, who now self-harms and needs therapy. The Met Police said the independent Office for Police Conduct was investigating the incident.
