The United Kingdom on Wednesday imposed new aviation sanctions against Russia which will give Britain the power to detain any Russian aircraft and ban exports of aviation or space-related goods to Russia in response to its military actions in Ukraine.

Britain will also tighten its ban on Russian aircraft, making it a criminal offence for any to fly or land in the United Kingdom.

On Tuesday, British transport minister Grant Shapps tweeted that any Russian aircraft to enter UK airspace will now be a "criminal offence."

"I have made it a criminal offence for ANY Russian aircraft to enter UK airspace and now HMG can detain these jets," Shapps said in a tweet.

The ban targets any aircraft owned, operated or chartered by anyone linked with Russia or designated individuals or entities. It will also enable the UK to detain any aircraft owned by persons connected with Russia, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

“Banning Russian flagged planes from the UK and making it a criminal offence to fly them will inflict more economic pain on Russia and those close to the Kremlin," foreign minister Liz Truss said.

The foreign office said it would bring in new legislation on Wednesday to implement the measures, which would also prevent aviation and space related exports including insurance and re-insurance.

The measures also include a power to remove from the British aircraft register any aircraft belonging to sanctioned Russian individuals and entities.

The new measures would also preclude aviation and space related exports including insurance and re-insurance.

This will mean cover is withdrawn on existing policies and UK-based insurers and reinsurers will not be able to pay claims on existing policies in these sectors, according to the statement.

On 24 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in Ukraine after Kiev failed to implement the Minsk agreements and resolve the conflict in Donbass peacefully.

Putin said that Russia was left with no other choice but to act after weeks of shelling of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) by Ukrainian forces. He thus ordered Russian forces to demilitarize Ukraine.
