Afghans mark the advent of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the lunar year preceding the holy month of Ramadan, with celebrations. They mark it through different festivals, especially at Abul Fazl Shrine in the capital Kabul.

On Monday, they gathered to celebrate the birth anniversary of Imam Hussain, the third Imam of Shia Muslims, and his loyal brother Abul Fazlil al-Abbas. They also congratulated other Muslims on the occasion.

As part of their tradition, they perform Manqabt Khani, chanting praises. The festivals are also an occasion for the faithful to refresh their soul and tighten Islamic brotherhood.

People in Afghanistan have long been fighting for their cultural and religious rights. They say no ruler or invader could make them give up their religious values.

This comes as Afghanistan is entering a new era with the Taliban back in power. People hope the era will open a window to a more peaceful and Islamic space in the war-torn country.
