Putin, Lavrov added to EU's sanctions list

EU foreign affairs ministers held talks on Friday in Brussels to bolster the 27-nation bloc's second round of new sanctions against Russia over the Kremlin's military campaign in Ukraine.

Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has also been added to the sanctions list. The idea is to block banks in the EU from making funds available to the two key Russian figures. Earlier on Friday, EU leaders agreed sanctions on Russia's energy, aviation and financial sectors.

Outside the EU leaders' summit, union members staged a peace demonstration. Leaders from the 30-country NATO alliance held a summit on Friday. The big question is, could moves by the West stoke the flames and turn this crisis into a catastrophe?

US troops, under the NATO flag, have just arrived in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Moscow had requested less provocation from NATO but it appears those calls continue to fall on deaf ears. According to some analysts, one positive fallout from the crisis could be greater independence for the EU when it comes to foreign policy.

The point has been made, there will be a realisation in the coming months, it is dangerous and extremely costly, economically, to allow Washington dictate relations between neighbours on the other side of the Atlantic.
