Russia-Ukraine conflict
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine enters its second day. Moscow now says its forces have destroyed 118 Ukrainian military infrastructure sites. The Russian defense ministry has denied allegations it launched missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kiev. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government says Russia has bombed 33 civilian sites over the past day. Clashes have been reported just outside Kiev. Inside the city, gunfire has been heard near the government district. Kiev’s municipal authorities have urged people to stay indoors as Russian forces approach the city. Since the early hours of Friday, blasts have been heard in other major Ukrainian cities too. The president says the world has left his country alone.
Russia wants to demilitarize Ukraine
The Russian Foreign Minister says his country is seeking to ensure demilitarization of the Ukrainian government, and has no plan to occupy Ukraine. Sergei Lavrov says Russia wants the independence of the Ukrainian people. He added, Moscow doesn’t see the possibility to recognize the current government in Kiev. The top Russian diplomat also said his country is open to negotiations, if Ukrainian forces lay down their arms. Western countries are strongly critical of the Russian military operation in Ukraine and imposed sanctions in response. Russia says it will remain part of the global economy despite those measures.
NATO Europe deployments
France says it is speeding up the deployment of its troops in Romania, a day after the US announced the dispatch of thousands of forces to Germany.
