Firemen search for survivors after deadly fire in southern France

Firefighters search for survivors in the southern French town of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, where seven people, including an infant and another child, died overnight from Sunday to Monday during a fire triggered by an explosion of unknown origin.

A man living in the neighborhood heard an explosion and ran to the building in the town center of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, arriving before the firefighters and describing a "war scene."

The casualties included two children, Darmanin said, calling the event "a historic tragedy" for the region.

Firefighter Alexandre Trani said the fire had engulfed the whole three-storey building and the neighboring ones.

Aside from the seven deaths, one person was badly burned and three lightly wounded, Trani said, while 26 people were evacuated. One person remained missing.

He said the spreading fire rendered the building vulnerable to collapse, impeding search and rescue operations.
