The United States could be headed for a second civil war if former President Donald Trump and his most extremist followers are not contained in the upcoming US elections, according to an analyst.
Beau Grosscup, professor emeritus of political science at California State University, warned the Americans' future could be the second civil war.
"Trump and his Republican fascist followers present the greatest threat to the US political/economic system since the start of the Great Depression," Grosscup said in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday.
He said the Trump Republicans are pursuing a "plutocratic rule" in the United States.
Grosscup said the US military will ultimately determine whether the Democrats or the Republicans seize the power.
"As always, where the US military stands will be decisive not only as to whether there is a civil war, but to who will win" in upcoming US presidential elections.
Grosscup said the future of the United States depended on the ability of the Democrats to run candidates at the state level or find ways to disqualify Trump candidates.
He said at the state-level Democrats needed to galvanize mass /Democratic Party efforts against the efforts in Republican Party dominated States to suppress the vote and enhance the power of State officials to overturn the voters' choice before and after the 2022 mid-terms.
"At the Federal level, to crack open the Trump unity in Congress," was up to the Democrats, he said, adding, "those responsible for the coup efforts and the Jan.6, 2020 insurrection on Capitol Hill" must legally be charged in court for sedition.
Grosscup said Trump's coup efforts still continued, "In his mind becoming President again could be the only chance he has of staying out of jail. In addition to the grandiose image of his place in the world, on a very basic level, it is why once he lost the election, he put in motion the effort to stay in power. Even before the election, he raised doubts about the legitimacy of the election in case he lost. "
