A new poll has found that 40 percent of Republicans approve of the US House Select Committee, which is investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, protest ash the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The findings by the Politico-Morning Consult poll, showed one in four of the GOP voters either strongly support or somewhat support the panel’s quest to bring to justice those protesting the result of the 2020 presidential election by storming the Congress premises.
Among those taking part in the poll, 16 percent said they had no opinion and another 44 percent said they oppose the committee.
In the liberal camp, the percentage of those supporting the probe was almost double, with 82 percent endorsing the probe, 2 percent opposing it and six percent having no opinion.
One of the interesting findings of the poll was the 14 percent of the voters, who said the riot had been held by opponents of the former president, who never conceded defeat to now-President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, 62 percent of the Democratic voters said the protesters were supporters of Trump, and 24 percent had no opinion.
Since Jan. 6, Democrats have been arguing that the protest by pro-Trump fans was an insurrection based on disinformation spread by the former president, who alleges that he is the true victor of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump is often cited by US media as the one inciting his supporters to storm the Congress premises in the hope of overturning the election results.
The former president has been blamed by Democrats of inciting his supporters to raid the Capital after a loss in the 2020 presidential race.
Although Trump appears to have gotten away with inciting violence and not recognizing Biden as the new president, some Democratic and Republican lawmakers are pursuing the issue to make sure pressure is maintained on the former leader.
The latest poll was released days before the the first anniversary of the deadly attack, which put the country in a state of shock.
