The key organizers of the Jan. 6 rally which was held near the White House used difficult-to-trace burner phones to keep their communications with former President Donald Trump secret, a new report has revealed.
According to a report by Rolling Stone magazine, Kylie Kremer, one of the key planners of the "Stop the Steal" rally that preceded the deadly Capitol attack on Jan. 6, ordered her aide days before the rally to buy three burner phones for their communications with Trump's inner circle, including his son Eric Trump.
She also emphasized it was "of the utmost importance" that the phones be purchased with cash.
“That was when the planning for the event on the Ellipse was happening, she needed burner phones in order to communicate with high-level people is how she put it,” one source, who was a member of the March for Trump team, told the magazine.
The report comes a month after it was revealed that the White House officials and many of Trump’s GOP allies had been involved in the planning of the Jan. 6 rally, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Since Jan. 6, Democrats have been urging that the protest was an insurrection based on disinformation spread by the former president, who alleges that he is the true victor of the 2020 presidential election and not President Joe Biden.
Many analysts have speculated that had the National Guard been deployed slightly later the insurrection attempt could have ended catastrophically as the protesters came quite close to elected officials such as then Vice President Mike Pence and several lawmakers, who were holding a session to certify now-President Joe Biden’s presidential victory against Trump.
On that day, and before the raid was carried out, Trump told his loyalists in Washington to show their support for him and asked them to "stop the steal" as lawmakers were in the process of confirming his defeat.
The deadly protest left five people dead and more than 100 police officers wounded.
According to recent surveys, most Republicans still believe that the election was stolen from billionaire businessman, and that he is the legitimate president of the United States.
