A woman was killed and a man seriously injured in a shooting Wednesday in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Westmont, authorities said.

About 3 p.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of W. 95th Street, Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Dean said.

At the scene, deputies found a Black man in his 40s who had been shot several times in his chest, Dean said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was stable Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, deputies learned that someone had dropped off a Black woman in her 20s at a different hospital, Dean said. The woman, who had been shot once in the chest and once in the lower body, died at the hospital.

Detectives believe the man and woman were shot in the same incident, although the relationship between the two — if any — remained unclear Wednesday night, Dean said. Investigators were still trying to identify the person who drove the woman to the hospital, because that person may have witnessed the shooting, Dean said.

Several hours after the shooting, 95th Street remained cordoned off at the intersection with Normandie Avenue as detectives canvassed the block, collecting shell casings and searching for footage from home surveillance systems.

Detectives recovered two types of shell casings at the scene, leading them to believe at least two people fired at the man and the woman, Dean said. Authorities had no descriptions of any suspects as of Wednesday.

Kansas killing

One person was killed and another was seriously wounded following a shooting Wednesday evening in Kansas City, Kansas, according to police.

Police were dispatched at 7:18 p.m. to the 1600 block of Walker Avenue after reports were received of a shooting there, Officer Thomas Tomasic, a spokesman for Kansas City, Kansas police, said in a statement. Officers found shooting victims from two locations apparently stemming from the same incident.

The first victim was a man found outside of a residence in the 1600 block of Walker. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

Officers later discovered a second victim inside a vehicle near the intersection of 15th Street and Waverly Avenue, roughly one mile away. That person was dead when police arrived, Tomasic said.

Further details about the identities of the victims or the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately disclosed by police. The department’s Major Case Unit is handling the investigation.

Deadly Memphis shooting

Rapper Young Dolph was killed in a shooting near a well-known bakery in Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday, his lawyer confirmed. He was 36.

Young Dolph, whose name was Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was in Memphis for his annual Thanksgiving giveaway, said the lawyer, Scott Hall. He was on his way to the event to hand out turkeys when he stopped at the bakery and was fatally shot, Hall said.

Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said in a statement Wednesday that officers responded to the shooting at 12:24 p.m. at an address on Airways Boulevard, southeast of downtown Memphis.

The address is the location of Makeda's Homemade Butter Cookies.

The victim, whom police preliminarily identified as Thornton, was pronounced dead at the scene, Davis said.

"The shooting is another example of the senseless gun violence we are experiencing locally and nationwide," she said. "Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all who are affected by this horrific act of violence."

Mayor Jim Strickland added in a statement that Young Dolph's death offered another reminder "of the pain that violent crime brings with it."

Davis said at a news conference Wednesday night that police were deploying more officers in areas "impacted" by the killing, and she encouraged people to stay home.

Davis said that a motive wasn't clear and that investigators were gathering details from witnesses to try to identify the shooter.

It was also unclear whether any cameras in the area might have recorded the killing.

Amid news reports that Young Dolph had been killed Wednesday afternoon, rappers and influencers expressed their grief and shock on Twitter.

"God bless Dolph," Chance The Rapper tweeted. "Real independent Memphis rapper born in chicago. loved by millions of ppl. Always showed love everytime I seen him this is tragic God bless his family man."

Rapper Gucci Mane said: “R.I.P. to my friend Dolph this broke my heart.”

“Damn man, me and Dolph used to be next door neighbors. Smh. RIP DOLPH," rapper Lil Yachty said.

DJ Akademiks tweeted video of a local newscast and said the scene of the shooting was flooded with fans and police.

The Commercial Appeal newspaper of Memphis reported that Young Dolph was born in Chicago and moved to Memphis as an infant.

The Commercial Appeal said Wednesday's shooting wasn't his first experience with gun violence. He had been the victim of two other shootings in 2017.

In February 2017, in Charlotte, North Carolina, a person fired more than 100 rounds at a heavily armored SUV, which he would credit with saving his life.

Later in 2017, he was critically injured after someone shot him multiple times outside a Hollywood hotel in Los Angeles. He made a full recovery, the newspaper reported.

Variety reported that he was the cousin of the Chicago rapper Juice Wrld, who died of a drug overdose at Midway International Airport in 2019.
