Many Moscow residents were seen on Monday disregarding face mask mandates while riding the metro on the first working day after the partial lockdown imposed by the Russian capital from Oct. 28 to Nov. 7 ended.

Russia reported 39,400 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, including 4,982 in Moscow, as many regions across the country emerged from a week-long workplace shutdown intended to curb the spread of the virus.

The government coronavirus task force also said 1,190 people had died of coronavirus-linked causes in the past 24 hours.

Russia has confirmed 8,834,495 cases of coronavirus and 248,004 deaths, according to the country's national coronavirus information center. Its total excess fatality count since the start of the coronavirus pandemic is at least 723,000.
