The European Union (EU) says it will give a "firm answer" to a ruling by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal bringing the primacy of EU law under question, and will call on Warsaw to "abide by the rules of the club."
Speaking to Reuters in Ukraine's capital city of Kiev on Tuesday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reiterated the European Commission's concern over the Polish ruling, without indicating what measures the bloc might adopt to force Poland to act based on the EU's desired standards.
Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled last week that parts of EU law were not in line with the country's constitution, challenging European integration and strengthening the perspective that Poland might one day leave the EU. However, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki says Poland has no desire to exit the bloc.
Addressing the participants of the 23rd Ukraine-EU summit held in Kiev, Borrell stressed that, "It has to clear: You are a member of a club, you have to abide by the rules of the club. And the most important rule of the club is that the European law is over national law."
The development came in the wake of an accusation by EU member states that the Polish government is curtailing the independence of the media and courts under the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.
