Iran's major nuclear facilities have been targeted by cruise missiles. Iranian air defense says it has successfully foiled the attack using homegrown missile systems.
This is the scenario for a massive military drill held over a half a million square kilometer area in central Iran. Codenamed Defenders of Velayat Skies, the air defense exercise engaged the Iranian army's air defense force and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ aerospace division.
The air drill involved the latest military equipment developed by Iranian experts, including missile systems, drones and radars. Iranian military officials boast the country's capabilities in indigenizing the defense industry, and say they owe this to the long-running US arms embargo.
The annual maneuver started on Tuesday and will continue until Wednesday. Military officials say that given the recent developments in Iran's eastern and northwestern borders, there's a need to strengthen coordination and synergy between the army and the IRGC so they are better prepared to deal with any potential aggression. And this drill will help achieve such a goal.
