Yemen war crimes probe

The UN Human Rights Council has voted to drop a UN probe into possible war crimes by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. NGOs and rights groups have decried the decision as intense Saudi arm-twisting. It marked the first time in the council's 15-year history that a resolution was defeated. The motion was proposed by several western countries. The Dutch ambassador expressed his disappointment, saying the Council effectively cut the lifeline of the Yemeni people to the international community. Earlier this week, several rights advocacy groups revealed that Saudi Arabia had been heavily lobbying against the resolution that would extend the mandate of UN investigators in Yemen. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the Saudi-led war on Yemen since 2015. The UN has already described Yemen as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Iran-Lebanon ties

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has paid a visit to Lebanon, where he highlighted Tehran’s readiness to play an active role in the Arab country’s development projects. Lebanese officials, who are dealing with an economic crisis, have welcomed Iran’s offer of help.

US debt ceiling

The US Senate has approved a bill to temporarily raise the federal government’s debt limit in order to avert default later this month.  All 50 Democrats have backed the bill while 48 Republicans were against it. The legislation adds another 480-billion dollars to the allowable national debt of 28.4 trillion dollars only 11 days before the deadline. The bill defers recession until December 3rd, when funding for most federal programs also expires under a stop-gap measure passed earlier this month. This means that Congress will have the twin challenges of finding a middle ground on spending through September 2022. The Senate-passed bill now goes to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to be approved.
