Turkey-US ties strained after Erdogan’s visit

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he has worked with all previous three American presidents but does not seem to have a good start with the current one.

Erdogan’s comments came right after his arrival to Turkey from the US. Erdogan noted that Ankara will not step back from its deal with Russia for the purchase of S-400 surface-to air missiles, which had already created tension between Turkey and the US.

Erdogan also criticized US failure in Afghanistan, adding that Washington cannot expect Turkey to pay the price of its irresponsible behavior there. He added that the US cannot expect Turkey to receive Afghan refugees and open its door to them.

Turkey-US relations have been at loggerheads due to US continuous support to YPG Kurdish militants in northern Syria. Washington is accused of providing Kurdish militants, affiliated with Kurdistan workers party, with weapons and training.

The Turkish president was hoping to solve disagreements between his government and the Biden administration in his visit to the US but it seems things got more complicated than before.
