Iran engages in only results-oriented talks; high time for US to wake up to new reality: Foreign Ministry

The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has once again reiterated Tehran’s resolve to engage in only results-oriented talks on ways to revive a nuclear deal it snatched with world powers in 2015, saying it is high time for the United States, which unilaterally abandoned the agreement, "to wake up to new reality."

“Only Iran speaks for Iran. Our mandate is to engage in only RESULTS-oriented dialogue,” Saeed Khatibzadeh said in a tweet on Friday.

He rejected talks for sake of talks and "the fallacy that economic terrorism works," adding that it is "high time for the party that unilaterally left JCPOA to wake up to new reality”, referring to the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Khatibzadeh’s tweet came after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran is ready to resume talks on the JCPOA revival “very soon” but the administration of US President Joe Biden is sending a “negative sign” by keeping illegal sanctions on Tehran.

Iran says it is ready to resume talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal but the US is sending a “negative sign” by keeping illegal sanctions on Tehran.

In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, the top Iranian diplomat said Biden needed to back up his talk of diplomacy with concrete actions to show Iran that Washington is serious about restoring the nuclear deal.

Addressing the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Biden announced his willingness to rejoin the JCPOA and resolve the issue with Iran over its peaceful nuclear program.

The US president said Washington was "working" with China, France, Russia, Britain and Germany to "engage Iran diplomatically and to seek a return to" the JCPOA.

"We're prepared to return to full compliance if Iran does the same," he said.

Iran and world powers, including the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, struck the JCPOA on July 14, 2015. Under the accord, Iran agreed to scale back some of its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

However, the US, under former President Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the deal and reinstated crippling sanctions on the Islamic Republic, although the country had been fully compliant with the deal.

In early April, Iran and the remaining parties to the JCPOA began to hold talks in Vienna, Austria, after the Biden administration voiced willingness to rejoin the nuclear agreement and remove the draconian sanctions his predecessor slapped on the Islamic Republic. 

Since the beginning of the Vienna talks, Tehran has argued that the US—as the first party that violated the JCPOA—needs to take the first step by returning to full compliance with the agreement. Tehran also says it will resume all of its nuclear commitments under the deal only after the US removes all the sanctions in practice.

The AEOI chief says the US should remove all its sanctions imposed on Tehran in order to resume negotiations on the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

The negotiations were paused soon after the victory of Ebrahim Raeisi in Iran’s June 18 presidential election.
