The Daesh terrorist group has carried out an attack near Iraq’s northern city of Kirkuk, killing 13 members of the Iraqi federal police, medical and security sources say.
The assault targeted a checkpoint to the south of Kirkuk just after midnight, a senior Iraqi police officer told AFP on Sunday. A security source told Shafaq News Agency that three policemen were wounded in the raid.
"The federal police forces clashed with Daesh terrorist gangs in the al-Rashad district of Kirkuk governorate," read a statement of the Security Media Cell carried by Alsumaria TV network.
Additionally on Sunday, Sabereen News, a Telegram news channel associated with Iraq’s anti-terror Hashd al-Sha’abi, said Daesh terrorists attacked positions held by Iraqi security forces in Salahuddin province, killing 13 of them and injuring two others.
Elsewhere in the suburbs of Mosul city in Nineveh province, three Iraqi military personnel lost their lives in a Daesh attack on an army base, Mawazin news website reported.
The Iraqi forces managed to thwart the attack and kill several militants, it added.
Daesh began a terror campaign in Iraq in 2014, overrunning vast swathes in lightning attacks.
Hashd al-Sha’abi played a major role in reinforcing the Iraqi army, which had suffered heavy setbacks against the Takfiri elements.
Iraq declared victory over Daesh in December 2017 after a three-year counter-terrorism military campaign, which also had the support of neighboring Iran.
The terror outfit’s remnants, though, keep staging sporadic attacks across Iraq, attempting to regroup and unleash fresh violence.
Daesh has intensified its terrorist attacks in Iraq since January 2020, when the United States assassinated top Iranian anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Hashd al-Sha'abi deputy commander, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, near Baghdad International Airport.
