Beirut blast anniversary

Thousands of Lebanese have gathered in the capital, Beirut, to mark the first anniversary of a catastrophic explosion that ravaged the city in 2020. People gathered in central Beirut and then marched toward the city’s port. They also demanded justice for the deadly explosion that killed over 200 people and wounded thousands more. The Blast, which occurred last August, caused by the ignition of tones of highly explosive ammonium nitrate, stored in the port’s warehouse since 2014. Several neighborhoods were also flattened. Then Lebanese Prime Minister Hasan Diab resigned in the wake of the incident. Since then the Mediterranean country has been run by a caretaker administration.

Israel-Lebanon tensions

The Israeli military says it has shelled areas inside Lebanon thrice in response to an alleged rocket attack. Israeli media reports say the military shelled Lebanon three times in the span of two hours. After that, three rockets were reportedly fired from Lebanese soil and landed into Northern Israel on Wednesday, prompting sirens. The regime’s military has blamed armed Palestinian groups inside Lebanon for the rocket fire. But no group has yet claimed responsibility. There has also been no report of any casualties and damage. Over the past years, the Israeli military has repeatedly shelled areas within Lebanon and violated the country’s airspace, prompting fierce criticism from Beirut.

Iraq bomb explosion

Iraqi security sources say a roadside explosion has hit a convoy carrying logistics for the US-led coalition in a southern province. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack that happened in Dhi Qar province. Last week, two other logistics convoys for the coalition were targeted in separate attacks in Dhi Qar and Qadisiyah provinces. Convoys for US-led forces and American diplomatic compounds have come under repeated attacks in the past months amid rising anti-US sentiments in the Arab country.
