A former US national security official from the Republican Party has called the GOP the “No. 1 national security threat."

In an interview with MSNBC, Miles Taylor said that he is a member of a group of former US officials, advisers and conservatives who worked in former Republican administrations. The group, which is called the Republican Political Alliance for Integrity and Reform (REPAIR), was formed during the tenure of former president Donald Trump.

“I’ve spent my whole career not as a political operative. I’ve never worked on a campaign in my life other than campaigning against Trump," he noted.

In the interview, Taylor described himself as "a national security guy ... [who] worked in national security against ISIS, al Qaeda and Russia.”

He added on Twitter on Friday that, "I stand by my statement. Unless my Party reforms, its extremist elements represent the leading threat to our democracy.”

Taylor, in the MSNBC interview, voiced warnings about the Republicans regaining control of Congress' lower chamber.

He said if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) became Speaker, it would catapult Trump to a power position. McCarthy represents “Trump’s hand on that Speaker’s gavel.”

“If Kevin McCarthy continues to pay homage to a twice-impeached presidential loser [Trump], I think should give all Americans pause and make them worry about the future of this country and national security,” Taylor concluded.

Taylor worked in Trump's administration from 2017 to 2019. He served at one point as chief of staff to Trump's then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Taylor, who was writing unnamed articles against Trump for some time, revealed his identity and his efforts as a member of the anti-Trump resistance group weeks before the divisive 2020 US presidential election.

Taylor, campaigned against Republican Trump and supported the Democratic candidate Joe Biden to win.

“Now is the time to speak up, before it’s too late ... to repair the Republican Party." the group’s website says.
