US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) feared former Republican President Donald Trump would launch a nuclear war in his final days in the White House, and asked the US military leadership to restrain him, according to a new book.
Pelosi called Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, after the January 6 violence at the Capitol to express her concerns about Trump’s dangerous behavior, Washington Post journalists Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker wrote in their book, “I Alone Can Fix It: Donald J. Trump’s Catastrophic Final Year.”
Pelosi wanted to ensure Trump could not start a war and launch nuclear weapons in the final days of his power, according to the book.
“This guy’s crazy,” Pelosi reportedly told Milley. “He’s dangerous. He’s a maniac.”
“Ma’am, I guarantee you that we have checks and balances in the system,” Milley responded, according to the book.
Milley and other military leaders also thought Trump would attempt a coup to stay in the White House and considered resigning, according to the book.
"They may try, but they're not going to f---ing succeed," Milley reportedly told his deputies when discussing the potential of a coup. "You can't do this without the military. You can't do this without the CIA and the FBI. We're the guys with the guns."
Milley thought Trump was “the classic authoritarian leader with nothing to lose,” the authors wrote.
Democrats, media are pushing war with Russia: Journalist
Commenting on the claims made in the book, American journalist Don DeBar said, “That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Nuclear war means war with Russia, and they're the ones that have been pushing war with Russia since Obama was president.”
“Trump tried to make peace and normalize relations with Russia and the New York Times and the rest of the corporate and non-profit media, along with all of the Democrats from Adam Schiff to Chuck Schumer, wanted to impeach him and prosecute him as a traitor,” DeBar told Press TV on Thursday.
“As far as a coup goes, you can't do a coup without the media. It takes more than the military and the CIA, unless there is popular support already. But the CIA and the FBI and the media were all aligned against Trump from the beginning - and on the very question of relations with Russia and China. Pelosi, Schumer, the FBI and CIA - these are the same people who attacked Trump for moving towards normalized relations with North Korea after 68 years of hostilities. For them to try to hold themselves out as sane voices against the lunatic Trump is laughable and pathetic,” he stated.
“By the way, I think the generals would likewise mitigate the warlike tendencies of that group, since they know what war with Russia actually means - hopefully. However, they are following Biden's orders - as they did Obama's - to deploy all around Russia and China, to intimidate China on the high seas, and to fight illegally in Syria and elsewhere, so they are not exactly a safe harbor against them,” DeBar concluded.
